Headline Outcome

The problem

ABB pays approximately $70M a month in NBN charges. For a typical enterprise customer, NBN is around 80% of the cost base. But there was no systematic way to match an NBN line item back to the customer bill it should have been recovered against.

The consequences were quiet and cumulative:

  • NBN kept charging for services after CMS stopped billing them, and nobody could see it.
  • Enterprise Ethernet services are billed by NBN under two separate identifiers. Only one of them was being reconciled.
  • One-off charges, pro-rata credits and rebates landed without a service reference and disappeared into an unattributable bucket.
  • A commercial analyst reconciling by hand was reaching a 70–80% match on customer profitability. The remaining 20–30% was where the money was.

A recent cloud business divestiture had already surfaced $2–3M of services being delivered at zero cost — discovered only because someone happened to look.

What RedOwl built

RedOwl stood up a reconciliation pulling raw NBN and CMS extracts through an ETL pipeline into a curated store, then running an AI behavioural matching service across it.

Three things mattered more than the pipeline itself:

Matching on identity, not convenience. NBN bills Enterprise Ethernet under both an OVC circuit ID and a BPI access ID; residential runs AVC plus PRI. The engine now resolves both identifiers in parallel rather than stopping at the first hit — the difference between seeing $350 of cost on a service and seeing the real $550.

A cross-month service directory. Built from every CMS month held, not just the invoice month being processed. When CMS stops billing and NBN keeps charging, the cost now attaches to the last known customer with recovery recorded as zero — which is precisely the shape of the leakage ABB wanted to see, rather than an anonymous write-off.

Explainability at the point of decision. Every variance drills down to the line items behind it, with an AI insight panel that summarises the driver, the cost breakdown, and whether the pattern is recurring or one-off.

“Reconciling this by hand, I could get to about 80% on a customer. The last 20% was always where the problems were hiding, and it was never the part I had time for. Every time I pushed on something that looked wrong, we either found a genuine gap in the logic, or I understood the data better. I trust what I'm looking at now because of that, not in spite of it."
